I know we're almost halfway to the next weekend, but I wanted to give a quick recap of the last one, mostly because I know my sister just loves when I break down the boring details of our hour-to-hour activities.
Before I get to that, however, Alecia just called to let me know that one of her mom's club chums just brought over dinner. It's the fifth and final dish we'll be getting through the Helping Hands program.
Here are the final stats:
Number of dishes that came with dessert: 5 (out of five)
Number of dishes that contained Mexican food: 4 (out of five)
Number of dishes that contained Enchiladas: 3 (out of five)
While Alecia and I are VERY grateful to those who've brought us food (including Eric and Katherine, who brought over some homemade cookies and taco soup, and Brett and Emily, who brought over chicken soup, a quiche, and a lasagna), we'd like to kindly request a cease fire on the enchilada front. Don't get me wrong, we love enchiladas! I, alone, have probably eaten about six pounds of the stuff over the last few weeks. But we have no more room in our freezer for casserole dishes, and with the baby being so tiny, we don't think the time's yet right to have people over for an impromptu fiesta.
Anyway, back to the weekend, which was EXPLODING with excitement!!! (Notice the extra exclamation points? EXPLODING!!!!) I already filled you in on how we spent Thursday (dinner at Eric and Katherine's), so I'll start with Friday night.
Alecia and I were lucky enough to be joined by our great friends Scott and Lynda, as well as my brother Todd and his lovely girlfriend Amanda (who really seems to have a way with our kids), at the Brazilian steakhouse Fogao Gaucho. It's become sort of an annual tradition to hit up one of the local churrascarias on or around my birthday. A churrascaria is a restaurant where the meal comes in two courses: the buffet beginning, which consists of an exotic salad bar and assorted soups, pasta, seafood, etc., followed by the meat course, where the gauchos bring anywhere from sixteen to twenty courses of meat to your table on gigantic skewers. You have a little disk at your table that's green on one side, red on the other. When you turn it to green, they bring the meat until you turn it back to red. In other words, it's a meal that's NOT made for vegetarians. When you're done, you'll eat more meat than you ever have in your life. We topped our meal off with a variety of desserts (each couple got one and shared it with the group), as well as cappucino and caipirinhas (basically, Brazilian margheritas). We were stuffed to the gills when we finally pushed away from the table.
Maddie and Josie came with us for the birthday feast, and were on their best behavior. Maddie ate some veggies, pasta, bread and cheese, then went with each of the people at our table to look at the big tropical fish tank at the front of the restaurant. One at a time, she let each of us carry her up to look at the fish. Josie was even easier, as she slept through the entire 2 1/2-hour meal. She even stayed asleep when the waiters sang a birthday song for the table next to us.
Pictures of the event can be found by clicking HERE. For some reason, Todd packaged the pics in an Adobe Acrobat slideshow. So when you click on the link, it may ask you to download some software. It's safe if you want to do that, but most of you should be able to see the album without downloading anything. Of course, you'll miss Todd's captions without the extra software. You'll have to call him and ask him to narrate the show.
After almost getting stuck in the middle of a robbery while stopping for gas (more on that later), we all came back to our place to play some games. We played so long that we kept Alecia and Lynda up well past their normal bedtimes. Even Maddie got to stay up late, finally crashing around midnight. We played Loaded Questions, which is a game where you answer rhetorical questions ("What celeb is least deserving of fame?" "What is the best attribute of the person to your right?" "What city would you live in if money wasn't an issue?"), then try to guess which answer belongs to which friend. Todd's answers were the easiest to guess, since all of them had something about "whores," "porn" or "boobs" in them (for example, the "What is the best attribute of the person to your right" question--that person for him was Alecia, who apparently has a "nice rack"). Despite being obvious, Todd was all set to win. He was on the final square, and only had to correctly guess one person's answer to take home the victory. It was 1AM, and we were all exhausted, but everyone's competitive nature kicked in. We all lied like dogs on our answers so that he wouldn't know whose was whose. I think the question was "What do you do to relax?" Answers included "Call phone sex lines", "Kick puppies", etc. Nobody answered it straight. Todd missed his chance for victory, and I swept in and won the game on my next turn. (Yes, they may have let me win because it was my birthday.)
On Saturday, Alecia and I had a shopping day. We loaded up the kids and headed to Babies R Us. I will never go there on a Saturday again. Not only was the store loaded with moms, new moms, and grandmoms, but the parking lot was also full of these deranged women, backing their massive SUVs and stationwagons wherever they pleased. It took me almost thirty minutes (and all the cuss words I know) just to park. Hey, I'm not saying the guys shopping at Home Depot on the weekends are any better...oh, wait, yes I am. There's no reason a 4'11" woman should be driving a truck that seats fifteen. Your family ain't that large, lady, and you can't even see over the steering wheel!
Back to the topic at hand, Alecia and I made a MAJOR PURCHASE on Saturday, picking up our very first double stroller. We bought the Graco because it was on sale, but mostly because it matched our other stroller and fit Josie's car seat. I put it together in the gift-wrapping area at the front of the store, and we left the box behind. We were planning to go somewhere after the baby store, so I had left the other stroller at home. We immediately made this stroller our primary one for our next stop: THE OUTLET MALL.
I won't spend as much time on our visit to the North Georgia Premium Outlets as I did on the rest of this boring post. We were there for about four or five hours, and here is what we bought:
- Two pairs of men's jeans from the Gap outlet
- A jar of Dulce de Leche ice cream topping, a half pound of chocolate coffee and a special cookie dough scooper from Le Chef Gourmet
- A sun hat, sunglasses, and a fleece jacket from The Children's Place outlet (total spent: $4.86...no joke)
- Six scented candles from the Yankee Candle Company Outlet
- Alecia, what am I forgetting?
On the way home from the outlets, we stopped at CompUSA so I could pick up a new power supply for my computer. It's been randomly shutting off on me when I try to play Half Life 2 or burn CDs. Of course, I installed the power supply on Sunday...and had two crashes last night. That was money well spent. Guess I'll keep looking for a solution.
Sunday, we stayed at home, except for a couple of errands. In the early afternoon, I went to the comic book store (yep, still a geek). In the evening, Alecia went to Target. We each took turns staying home with the kids. In between those two outings, our friends Stefan and Jean came over bearing gifts for Maddie and Josie. We all hung out for a few hours and ate some of the Carvel ice cream cake Carolyn brought us on Friday. By the way, Jean is due to give birth at the end of this month (it's an epidemic), so she has that beautiful pregnant glow. But we neglected to take any pictures, despite our promise to take more when we had friends and family over.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, was our weekend.
Regarding our week so far, the last few days have been very tiring for Alecia and I. Maddie's been teething again, and Josie has been gassy. Having two kids who won't sleep means we've had some long nights. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The marketing girls at work bought us two nights' worth of a night nurse's services! That's a nurse who comes over around 10pm and sits up with your baby ALL NIGHT. We haven't met the nurse yet, but she has some good references from my coworkers. Apparently, she's like the baby whisperer, in the fact that she knows how to comfort any baby. And she won't even watch TV or read while she's over--she just sings to and holds the baby. I'll admit, it will be strange to have a random person in our house like that. And the dogs may be a problem. But we're looking forward to a full night's sleep. I plan to go to bed as soon as she arrives, and sleep the sleep of the dead. (Who am I kidding? I plan to play video games. Then, I sleep!)
See, Julie, the above is what happens when someone says they want to hear about our weekend. From Alecia, you get a paragraph. From me, you get the unabridged version of the King James Bible.
One final note: I added something to the right side of this page. Can anyone guess what it is? That's right, there are now links to pictures from the Schneiders! (For those who don't know, that's my sister's family.) They host their photos on oFoto, not on our server, but I wanted to link to them here to share the wealth. I hope to link to some of our other family members' pics if they'll let me. Even better, I'd like to see some of our family members join this blog. It's easy for me to give you a password and the address to go to so that you can post on here. Just let me know if you're interested!
Peace out! (Man, I'm so 1990.)
